The Big Pot – Unsung Heroes #2

Allan Peeters

I am sure I have written about this before, but these few people need to be recognised, things do not just happen, someone must do it.

There are guys that do things for the love of the sport, al be it for there discipline they shoot. Were it not for those few people, that discipline would die.

Take for example Bow shooting, Karel stopped shooting bow, so the discipline died. Black powder, that leader stopped shooting, so did the discipline. Pin shooting, Jurg passed away and so did the discipline.

The .22 discipline is very big. But thanks to John Rutherfoord-Jones and Dave Wilson it’s still going strong.

I don’t think you other shooters realise how much John has done for silhouette shooting. I started rebuilding the rifle silhouette ranges a few years ago with the help of Mike Zantow and John Valenteen. It then sort of ground to a stop.

John climbed in and with the help of Donald and a team of workers, my grader and loader got it up and running. Moved backstops, built berms, planted rails, built “afdakke”, and sourced silhouettes to shoot at.

We have hosted a few SAMSA shoots, and the ranges look great. LOTS OF WORK WENT INTO THAT. It just not appeared out of thin air, someone had to do it!

But it does not stop there, the berms must be maintained. Shoots must be arranged, Squadding, organising, and advertising shoots. All takes dedication.

Side note: John also served as chairman on the Wolwehoek executive team for a few years and currently is serving as the secretary for 2022. Dave served on the executive team for a few years as well and currently holds the position as Head of Centre Fired Long Gun discipline.

THANKS TO YOU GUYS THE CLUB STILL GOES ON.
