John-R Jones
Runner
Saturday 5 November was the last of the series of .22 LR championship shoots for scoped rifle, open sight rifle and sport handgun. We had 4 newcomers to the championship, Eljé van Deventer, Carin Morgans, and Danie and Hannelie Cilliers
Well done to Eljé who posted the highest score of the day as well as the highest for the year. Danie and Hannelie used an open sight Unique .22 which is a small .22 semi auto pistol inserted into a rifle upper turning it into a semi auto rifle. Very nice but the lack of a scope made scoring a bit more difficult; Danie confirmed that he has a scope and mounts to set up ready for the next runner competition. Jimmy Bekker also attempted the shoot with his open sight and discover that it is not as easy as one may think. Target acquisition may be easier, but shot placement is not so precise so good scores are bit more elusive.
Top 3 scores:
- Eljé van Deventer (60)
- John R-Jones (45)
- Dave Wilson (44)
The final scores for the Runner event:
Open Sight Rifle
The fourth and final open sight shoot took place directly after the runner. Once again Eljé posted the top score of 70, even though I tied with him, he takes the top position because he nocked down more rams than I did. Jimmy Bekker who scored very well up front but failed to accommodate the wind at the rams 100m out pushing him down to 3rd place.
The final scores for the Open Sight Rifle event:
Sport Handgun
Come on Eljé, enough now you can’t win them all, but he did, posting an impressive score of 75. Sharon Mladina arrived Saturday with her brand-new Ruger mark 4 .22 pistol: a truly beautiful pistol.
Unfortunately, one cannot pitch up to a competition with a brand new gun and score well with it; she is going to have to do some serious paper work to get setting and the appropriate sight picture and settings for the respective silhouettes at the various distances.
The final scores for the Sport Handgun event:
You will have to wait for the prize giving evening on 2nd December to find out who has won the respective sub disciplines as well as .22 LR Rimfire overall.
Next year we may change some of the formats e.g., we are thinking of shooting the runner from a bit further back (40m) and shoot at full size targets, perhaps the jackal, a duiker and a warthog. Watch this space.
