Anso Spencer
PD & Ronel are hectically busy with wedding preparations for their eldest son and had to be at kitchen teas and other functions on 8 November. PD arrived early in the morning to complete his competition shoots before they had to leave for the respective functions. He arrived to some interesting challenges which I will explain shortly…
The rest of us arrived around midday to be greeted by a very well-prepared RO, Johann Seyffert. A new Wolwehoek member arrived and Allan promptly took him through induction and safety training. After that we were off to the trap range for a “normal” shoot. There was nothing “normal”!! Instead of the usual orange, the clays were black. Sean tried his best to convince us that black clays are actually easier to see. Allan mumbled something about cutting down the trees in the background to accommodate the black clays… Allan, Clive, Tom and Anso started with a test round. Just as well! We could see the black clays just fine… providing that the clay did not pass in front of the 2 afore mentioned trees… in which case they completely disappeared from sight!
The trap machine also kept on malfunctioning, so we ended up with more “no-birds” than “birds”. It was also difficult to see chips with the black clays, as the wads looked like chips because everything was the same colour. I kept calling chips, to which I got no response. With Donald as trapper, Ronel was sorely missed…
After what felt like an eternity, the round ended and the inspection started. It turned out that the black clays were marginally bigger than the orange clays and caused the trap machine to malfunction. Clive and Donald removed all the black clays and replaced them with orange clays.
Eventually the official competition round started with orange clays, which meant that PD was the only person who shot his competition round with the black clays. Allan, Tom and Sean shot the first round of trap, followed by Anso, Clive and Mark. There were numerous ties and all scores were determined on count back.
Allan, Tom, Sean and Clive also completed an official competition round of skeet afterwards, in which Sean shot a 25 straight!!
